Simcoe Muskoka Emergency

County of Simcoe Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit The District Municipality of Muskoka

Shelter in place

If there is a hazardous materials incident that results in an airborne chemical hazard you may be advised to shelter-in-place at you residence or business.  The aim of sheltering-in-place is to limit your exposure to the hazardous material by taking steps to prevent it from entering the building.

Before an Emergency

Identify areas in your home or business where a gas or other airborne hazard could enter.
Locate materials that you could use to seal off your home. (Duct tape, plastic sheeting, and tarps)

During an Emergency

To shelter-in-place:

  • Close and lock all windows and exterior doors.
  • Turn off the fan in your heating and air conditioning system.
  • Close the fireplace damper in your chimney.  Seal off the clothes dryer vent, shower vent, and the range hood vent above your stove.
  • Shelter in an interior room, ideally one without windows, that is above ground.  Chemical gases that are heavier than air may seep into basements through windows.
  • Bring your emergency kit with you.
  • Using duct tape, seal all cracks around the door and any vents into the room.  Use duct tape and plastic sheeting or tarps to seal off windows.
  • If there is danger of an explosion, close window shades, blinds, and curtains.

After an Emergency

Listen to your radio or television for further instructions.  You will be informed when it is safe to leave the building.  In some situations local officials may order the evacuation of specific areas that are at greatest risk in your community.
