Drinking Water in Emergencies

The Risks

In an emergency, your water may become unsafe for consumption.  Flooding or power outages can cause water treatment plants and filtration systems to stop working properly.  Chemical spills or water-borne diseases can also contaminate water sources.

If a boil water advisory has been issued, have your water tested before using it to prepare food, drink, or brush teeth.  Use water that has been bottled from a source that is known to be safe instead.

The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit has developed a number of fact sheets about drinking water safety.  Click on the links for more information.
